Tony 2 The Millienium Hotel in the theater district was in a state of controlled pandemonium a day after Tony nominations were announced: Jane Fonda, Liza Minnelli, Geoffrey Rush, Allison Janney were escorted about by publicists for photographers and press. By all accounts, this has been a stunning season on Broadway, with more shows than in previous periods, many simply excellent. The onstage “reasons to be pretty” couple, Marin Ireland and Thomas Sadowski breezed by. I tried to shake her hand and saw it was bandaged. “I did it,” quipped Sadowski. “We’re trying to compete with the “God of Carnage” couples.” True, Yasmina Reza’s play is known for marital discord, so much so that an injured James Gandolfini made the tabloids after Marcia Gay Harden jumped him. These actors were nominated as were their foils played by Jeff Daniels and Hope Davis–all for their first stage roles after many years of film work, movies being more compatible with raising children. Davis added that work in theater is more physically demanding, so I had to ask about the now famous projectile vomit, by what physical force, how is it done? “Remote control and a fire extinguisher,” she said clearly prepared. And how about competing with Harden for Best Leading Actress: “I hope Marsha wins.”  Davis is also good in HBO’s “In Treatment.” “What do you think she’ll do next?” she asked me gamely, referring to her unpredictable character Mia. Of course she wouldn’t tell. “Hair” director Diane Paulus is nominated for her very first Broadway venture; the musical garnered 8 nominations, making it third most nominated after “Billy Elliot” and “Next to Normal.” Let me say it now: “Hair” should win for Best  Revival of a Musical, even over the wonderful “West Side Story,” which should be a win for Josefina Scaglione for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. I tell Paulus I want to create a category of my own, Most Handsome Man on Broadway, and present it to Will Swenson, nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his role as Berger, so jumpy and in-your-face he had his feet up on Joy Behar’s back during the performance I attended. Diane Paulus smiled: “His beauty comes from within.”
